This is a setting of a poem by Susan Glickman from a set published in the July 2018 edition of Walrus Magazine as “Extinction Sonnets.” The Monteverde toad, or Golden toad, Incilius periglenes, is an extinct species of true toad that was once abundant in a small, high-altitude region north of the city of Monteverde in Costa Rica.
