Isbjørn!
Year: 2013, rev. 2017
Publisher: Cypress Choral Music
For: Two choirs: SATB and SSAA, soloists SATB, piano, percussion.
Duration: ca. 20 min
Isbjørn! was conceived during a trip to the High Arctic in the autumn of 2012 when I was a member of The Arctic Circle Expedition, an artistic residency programme aboard the 50-metre tall ship SS Antigua. The work was inspired by the northern landscapes and maritime settings. For those of us on the expedition, the polar bear became a mythical creature; we were aware of its existence, but it was not until the final days that we actually encountered one. As a result of global warming, the fragile polar habitats are at risk, and the future of this magnificent animal is uncertain.
Commissioned by Via Choralis, with support from the BC Arts Council.
